Hottest Rumors (updated June 19, 2000)

Latest News:

6/24 - 3dfx's woes
3dfx pre-announced lower-than-expected earnings this quarter, blaming a component shortage. It turns out that the shortage is of VSA-100 chips. This, along with a drop in the NASDAQ, helped to send NVDA stock down on Friday. However, 3dfx's problems are many, including very low yields on the VSA-100. Nvidia doesn't appear to be affected:

Nvidia officials, meanwhile, have said previously that they expect to be unaffected by wafer constraints, as the company believes itself to be TSMC's largest customer

6/22 - Earnings Estimates Raised
Looks like an analyst raised earnings estimates for this quarter, so current estimates are $.51/share. Earnings are expected to be announced in mid-August. Remember, last quarter NVDA beat street expectations with $.47/share vs. $.39 expected... With all the new TNT2 design wins, strong GeForce2 sales and the release of NV11, this quarter is shaping up very well indeed.

6/21 - Compaq PR
Told you about this on Monday. Key point is that Compaq is a huge supplier of PCs to the corporate market, and once they get set on a design, they stick with it for well over a year. This means steady pricing and profit. This was ATI's bread and butter for years, and now NVDA is taking over. NVDA also has high-end product, which makes for a much more powerful mix than ATI ever had.

``NVIDIA has been working closely with Compaq on desktop graphics solutions for several years and are very pleased to add the Deskpro EN Series to our portfolio of successful programs,'' said Jeff Fisher, vice president of sales at NVIDIA. ``We have been driving to become the dominant provider of graphics solutions to the corporate desktop and, with the addition of the Deskpro EN Series, we are a large step closer to this goal.''

6/19 - Compaq Design Win
In the latest conference call, Jen-Hsun talked about two more big new design wins. Here's a bit of info on Compaq's announcement today. This is huge, because it will guarantee stable pricing and excellent volume for literally years to come.

For the first time in two years, Compaq is changing both its case designs and the guts of its corporate desktop PC line, the Deskpro EN... On Monday Compaq will announce the integration of Compaq's latest chipset, the 815E, into the EN series. The 815E, supports PC133 SDRAM memory, 3 DIMM slots, 4x AGP and has integrated network and graphics capabilities.... EN systems will also come with nVidia's TNT2 Pro-C graphics chip with 16MB of graphics memory.

So, when a company in this cutthroat industry continues to shine bright, it tends to garner some attention. These days, Nvidia  is doing just that. The chip maker, which has been a favorite among the Wall Street crowd for some time now and a leader in its industry, is set to unveil its new chip, the GeForce2 MX, at PC Expo later this month. This latest graphics processor promises to give Nvidia a foothold in several new markets, and analysts are saying this could be the next big thing for the company.

6/19 - BusinessWeek rates NVDA as #4
In this year's Info Tech Top 100, NVDA rated at the top:

Huang [Nvidia's CEO] has kept Nvidia on keel through more than seven years of intense struggle. Now, it vies with ATI Technologies Inc. for the top spot in 3D graphics chips, the thumbnail-sized slivers of silicon that draw fast, detailed images on PC screens. That has earned it the highest ranking for a semiconductor company on the Info Tech 100--No. 4 overall--in the heady company of Nokia, Siebel, and Oracle. ''Nvidia is an overnight sensation that took seven years,'' Huang crows.

5/31 - Forbes.com on NVDA vs. 3dfx
Shows how NVDA conquered the 3D graphics market:

Nvidia has never wavered," says Jon Peddie of Jon Peddie Associates, a Mill Valley, Calif., research firm that tracks the chip industry.
